Beauty news september 2026

Every month we collect the Japanese beauty news that made us stop scrolling. September 2026 brought a 3% acid that performs like 20%, a beauty device you wear on your fingers, AI that measures “translucent skin”, a cream that forms a second skin, a mist that is both skincare and perfume, a €1,500 jar made with Baccarat — and a brush that treats scalp and face as one.

Here is what happened in Japan, what it actually means, and which ideas we think will travel to Europe.

3% azelaic acid performing like 20%?

Azelaic acid is a well-known ingredient, but it is hard to keep dissolved in a formula. Rohto developed a new technology that keeps it dissolved without neutralising it, and reports four times better penetration.

In Rohto’s 12-week study, a 3% serum showed a reduction in acne lesions comparable to a 20% cream, with less irritation at the start.

The idea is not simply adding more active ingredient, but helping a smaller amount reach the skin more efficiently. For anyone whose skin dislikes strong acids, that is a very welcome direction.

What if your fingers became the beauty device?

YA-MAN’s new Finger Liftouch is worn directly on the thumb and index finger. As you pinch, lift or press the skin, the device delivers EMS exactly where your fingers touch.

It also includes ion care and can be used around the eyes, mouth and jawline — even over a sheet mask.

The idea is simple: your own hands already know the movements of a facial massage. The device just adds technology to them.

Can AI measure “translucent skin”?

In Japan, one of the most specific beauty ideals is skin that looks clear, luminous and almost translucent. ALBION is teaching AI to analyse it.

One deep-learning model evaluates translucency, while another visualises how the face might look with higher or lower levels of it.

A subjective beauty concept is becoming something technology can actually measure.

A cream that creates a “second skin”?

Kao’s new est Genolux Cream uses technology inspired by ultra-fine fibres. After application, the formula creates a thin, even film across the skin.

The film is designed to resist three things that wear makeup down during the day: sweat, sebum and friction — while smoothing the surface and helping makeup sit more evenly.

Last month it was a film for the eye area that you peel off in the morning. This month it is a film inside a cream. The “second skin” idea keeps growing.

Perfume or skincare? Shiseido says both.

The new Scentcare Skin Mist contains 85% skincare ingredients and is designed as both a face and body essence and an eau de toilette.

The concept comes from Shiseido’s research into the connection between skin, scent and emotional wellbeing. Instead of treating fragrance as the final step, Shiseido is turning it into part of the skincare ritual.

The ritual has two steps:

  1. Spray. Shake well to mix the two layers, then spray once onto the face or desired area of the body from about 30 cm away.
  2. Breathe. Once the mist reaches the skin, gently cup your hands in front of your face and enjoy the fragrance while breathing slowly and deeply.

Would you pay €1,500 for a face cream?

DECORTÉ launched a new version of AQ Meliority The Cream Decoration — including an ultra-luxury 60 g edition created with Baccarat, priced at around €1,500.

Inside: 40 beauty ingredients, including NMN, PDRN, glutathione and peptides.

The formula also introduces poEXO Messenger-some™ technology, inspired by the way cells communicate with each other.

Luxury in Japanese skincare is no longer only about the formula. It is also about the object you keep on your shelf.

Why stop at the face when the scalp is connected?

ReFa’s new BIRI BARI BARI treats scalp and face as one connected beauty zone. The brush-like device combines four technologies — RF, LED, microcurrent and EMS — for scalp care and facial muscle stimulation.

Japan’s beauty-device category is moving away from isolated zones and toward a more connected approach to the entire head and face.

What September tells us

  • Smarter, not stronger. A 3% acid that performs like 20% shows where actives are heading: better delivery, less irritation.
  • Devices are leaving the face. Fingers, scalp, the whole head — beauty tech now follows the body, not just one zone.
  • The “second skin” is here to stay. After August’s eye film, a cream now builds its own film against sweat, sebum and friction.
  • Feelings can be measured. AI is turning translucency — a very Japanese ideal — into data.
  • Ritual matters. From a skincare mist you breathe in to a crystal jar you keep, the experience is part of the product.

EXC’s tip

Several of this month’s stories are about doing more with less: a smaller dose that works better, one device for scalp and face. I follow the same rule in my own routine — fewer products, used every day, rather than many products used now and then. Consistency is what the skin notices first.
