Beauty news august 2026

Every month we collect the Japanese beauty news that made us stop scrolling. August 2026 had a quantum algorithm helping design a cleansing oil, a “second skin” you peel off in the morning, AI that shows how your face could look — and a skincare idea that is centuries older than all of them.

Here is what happened in Japan, what it actually means, and which ideas we think will travel to Europe.

100 billion formulas. 10 seconds to choose one.

Imagine trying every possible combination of oils and concentrations for a single cleanser. There are more than 100 billion of them — no lab could test that by hand. So KOSÉ handed the problem to a quantum-hybrid algorithm.

The result is DECORTÉ AQ Pore Blackhead Dissolver, an oil calculated to dissolve and break down the sebum plugs that sit inside pores. KOSÉ started this research back in 2019; today its system can generate a formula in around ten seconds. The oil launched in Japan in 2025, and this summer Mintel named it one of the most innovative launches of 2026.

Why it matters: the computer doesn’t replace the chemist — it narrows billions of options down to the few worth testing. Expect to see many more formulas designed this way.

A “second skin” you peel off in the morning

Shiseido’s REVITAL Night Eye Corset sounds like science fiction: two steps that form a thin, flexible membrane around the eye area. You sleep in it — and in the morning you simply peel it off.

The first launch sold out in a day and a half. In September 2026 it came back by popular demand, and around 64% of first buyers said they would buy it again.

Think of it as a light corset for the under-eye area while you rest. Night, not morning, is becoming the main event in Japanese skincare — and this is the boldest example yet.

AI that shows how your face could look

Shiseido’s ELIXIR AI Skin Analyzer measures 16 skin parameters from a photo — radiance, the under-eye area, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, wrinkles and spots. Around 1.73 million people have used it since September 2024.

In August it learned something new: it can now simulate how your face may look with less sagging. The method behind it is patented. The AI compares the shape of your face looking straight ahead and looking up — gravity works differently in the two positions, and the difference shows how much the contours have dropped.

Shiseido says the goal is motivation: you see your own possible result instead of an abstract promise. We find that fascinating and worth a pause at the same time. A tool that shows a “better” you can inspire a routine — or feed the feeling that you are never quite enough. Use it as a compass, not a mirror.

Skincare that takes moisture from the air

Yes, really. Kao’s new SOFINA BASIC+ lotion, launched in Japan on 8 August 2026, uses what Kao calls Self-Water-Absorption Technology: the formula draws in moisture from the surrounding air and holds a watery veil on the skin.

A small product with a big idea. Instead of only adding water, it works with the air around you — a clever answer for air-conditioned offices and dry winter apartments.

Glass skin? Japan has a new one.

Meet “shiratama skin”: smooth, bright and softly translucent, like shiratama — small Japanese glutinous rice dumplings. Shiseido’s MAQuillAGE built its new Essence Cushion around this look.

The trick is in the order of things. With what the brand calls Serum First Technology, the foundation pigments are wrapped in a serum base before they ever touch the skin — so your skin meets care first and colour second. Where glass skin is all mirror shine, shiratama is a softer, rounder glow.

POLA turned a salon ritual into a night cream

In POLA’s salons, one signature treatment uses a plaster mask that sets on the face. The new Wrinkle Shot Night Cream brings that feeling home: its “Lift Tension Veil” wraps the skin overnight, so it still feels firm and cushioned in the morning.

It also turns four steps into one — serum, emulsion, cream and night mask in a single product. Wrinkle Shot is a famous name in Japan: the original serum was the first product there officially recognised for improving wrinkles. The new night cream is about something else — texture, ritual and the feeling of firmness.

Japanese skincare is talking about “ki” again

Ki (気) is the Eastern idea of vital energy. KOSÉ’s new SEKKISEI BLUE Timeless Radiant Serum, launched in Japan on 21 August 2026, builds on it — linking how skin looks to breathing, stress and a sense of vitality.

A concept, not a claim — and that is exactly what makes it interesting.

Nobody is promising that a serum will change your energy. It is a very Japanese reminder that a tired, stressful day shows on the skin, and that a routine can be a moment to slow down and breathe. This one is also close to home: the SEKKISEI BLUE line is already sold in France and Spain.

What August tells us

  • Night is the new prime time. A peel-off eye film, a four-in-one night cream — Japanese brands are investing in the hours you sleep.
  • Technology moved behind the scenes. Quantum algorithms and AI now help design formulas and guide routines.
  • Feeling is the new benefit. Firm in the morning, cushioned, translucent: texture and sensation matter as much as ingredients.
  • Wellbeing is back in skincare. Ki brings breathing and stress into the conversation.

EXC’s tip

The night trend is the easiest one to bring into your own routine today. In my evening routine the last layer is always the richest one, and I press it in with warm palms instead of rubbing — the Japanese way. It takes a minute, and in the morning my skin feels softer and more rested.
